Boy Saved From Burning Building

BRONX, New York. A local store owner becomes a hero for rescuing a child trapped in a burning building.
While walking down the street Horia Cretan heard screaming and noticed smoke coming from the window of a nearby building. Without hesitation he immediately climbed the fire ladder and rescued a young child.

Adoption Campaign in New York’s Subways

vacancy-ads-425sz092809The same headline can be seen in every local paper these days — “Hundreds of Pets Left at Shelters by Financially Strapped Owners”. Small towns and big cities alike are experiencing increasing numbers of pet surrenders at local shelters, and rescue groups around the world are getting creative in getting the word out about adoptions.

The latest attempt can be seen in New York City.

A new ad campaign, which debuted yesterday, asks city subway riders during their commute, “Is there room in your life for a homeless pet?” on print ads placed in train cars. A collaboration between the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals and Filter Advertising (who worked with the non-profit pro-bono), the ads themselves were made two years ago for an outdoor poster campaign and have now been recycled to take advantage of the eyes of bored commuters, hopefully spurring adoption. The campaign will be up until October 25th.

For those not in New York, you can check out all five ads on the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals website.

Saudi Arabia First Co-ed University

kaust_librarySaudi Arabia opened its first co-educational university on Wednesday, a high-tech campus with massive funds which reformers hope will spearhead change.

Western diplomats hope the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), which has attracted more than 70 professors and 800 students from abroad, will stimulate reform after recent setbacks such as shelving municipal elections and cancelling cultural events opposed by clerics. From Sicily with Pride

gps-for-dummiesThis is for all the mafia movies ever made and the stories portraing “Sicilians” as bad people.
Violence is, unfortunately, a pretty common extracurricular activity at Italian football games.
So when you hear that a group of visiting Chievo (Verona) supporters were accosted by bad Catania (Sicily) apples and had the GPS stolen out of their car a couple weeks ago, it comes as no surprise.
But what you don’t hear often is that other supporters, the majority of whom are good, have taken to righting the wrongs of their reluctant brethren, as a group of Catania supporters did for the lads who’d met a few of the unfavorable Elefanti tifosi. (more…)
